Death duties

Sir,—ln an attempt to pander to its remaining supporters in the rural community the National Party is likely to alienate itself from potential new farmere. The long-term effect of Mr Bolger’s latest policy release — the abolition of death and gift duties — would lock up more land within families and promote the accumulation of land. It may well be National’s intention to revive a landed aristocracy, but it has once again fallen into the trap of making promises for short-term political gain that will be to the long-term detriment of the country as a whole.—Yours, etc., GEOFF STONE. Ashburton, ■ June 8, 1987.
