Doctor satisfied with inquiry

PA Auckland The doctor at the centre of an inquiry into a cancer treatment programme at National Women’s Hospital said yesterday he was satisfied with the terms of reference.

An Auckland magazine article said recently that Dr Herbert Green, now retired, had run an experiment at the hospital for more than 20 years. It claims he did not

treat women for signs of

i cervical cancer because i he did not believe it was J- necessary. j Dr Green said he hoped > justice would be done at * the inquiry. He had r sought legal advice about I’ his appearance. £. Asked what he would

like to see come out of the inquiry, Dr Green said, “I would like to see priorities established as regards medical treatment” He said too much attention was being given to cervical cancer, while instances of bowel and breast cancer were of much higher incidence and warranted more care.

The Opposition has welcomed the inquiry. Its spokesman on health, Mr Paul East, said the Opposition had always maintained that a full inquiry must be held. “It is important that this inquiry is seen to be independent of both the Government and the medical profession," he said.
