‘Players have own doctors’

PA Dunedin World Cup rugby organisers are annoyed at an inference that the Accident Compensation Corporation may foot a heavy bill for injuries to players in the tournament.

Mr John Dowling, of Dunedin, a member of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s council and of the World Cup committee, yesterday replied to reports that the corporation had to pay the bill for all treatment incurred in the tournament “To the best of our knowledge there have been few claims at the venues of the World Cup matches in New. Zealand,” Mr Dowling said. “Any such claims would be minimal because all 16 teams at the tournament have been accompanied by their own doctors and physiotherapists.

“The contribution of such qualified people has ensured that any injuries are promptly and efficiently treated, and that players are back in action again as soon as is humanly possible,” said. “Every visitor to New Zealand, tourist pr sportsman, is entitled to A.C.C. assistance. But few travel, as have the World Cup rugby players, with thenown medical teams to give them immediate treatment.”
