Mamie McGuire, of Auckland, slumped to a 13-over-par 88 in the first qualifying round for the British amateur women’s golf championships yes- . terday. McGuire’s score on the Royal St David’s course at Harlech, Wales, left her 13 shots behind the leader, Karen Davies, and
needing a scorcher today if she is to make the field of 32 for the matchplay championship starting tomorrow. Last year McGuire became the youngest winner of the championship this century when at the age of 17 she beat Australia’s 1 Louise Briers in the final, i The pacesetter, Davies, is bidding to become the first Welsh player to win the championship.
