N-legislation welcomed
The Harbour Workers Union has welcomed the passage of legislation banning nuclear-armed and powered ships from New Zealand harbours.
The union’s secretary, Mr Ross Wilson, said that the port and maritime unions had called for this more than a decade ago. “The trade union initiative had its origins in bans against nuclear vessels imposed by port workers,” he said. “The ban was brought dramatically to public attention in the port of Wellington in 1976 with the combined port action against the U.S.S. Truxtun.”
That action brought thousands of messages of support from individuals and organisations throughout New Zealand, he said. It was clear that even then there was widespread support for an anti-nuclear foreign policy. ARRIVALS Sam Won 97 (6 a.m.), sea (Scales). DEPARTURES Kiwi Ace, (5 p.m.), 9857, Wellington (P. and O.).
