Table tennis tourney
The South Island interassociation table tennis teams’ tournament at the Selwyn Street Stadium this week-end has attracted a record entry of 41 teams. It is the first time the tournament has been held in Christchurch since 1983 and the large entry will severely test the stadium’s resources with about 3500 games to be played. Otago appears to have the strongest entry and has been given the top seeding in both
the men’s and women’s events. The former New Zealand junior champion, Gary Traill, heads the Otago men’s team, with David Puper providing strong support. Canterbury looks the next best chance with Karl Entwistle and Peter de Boer in the men’s team and Pam Shadbolt and the veteran, Thelma May, in the women's team. Every association from Nelson and West Coast to Southland is being represented.
