Immunisation idea filling clinics
PA Auckland The new Health Department “immunise your child and win a video” campaign is filling suburban Plunket clinics. Toys, household appliances, Postbank accounts and food are offered as prizes in a promotion to encourage parents to immunise children against meningococcal meningitis. Type A of the infectious disease — which can be fatal — has reached epidemic proportions in cen-
tral, western and southern Auckland. Nearly 140 cases have been reported in the last two years and 16 patients have died. The campaign co-ordi-nator, Dr Dell Hood, said the department was trying to reach people who were not being reached by traditional campaigns. “We want to make it a positive, fun thing rather than beating people with a big stick saying 'Your children will die if you don’t’,” she said.
