French Open’s Czech flavour
NZPA-Reuter Paris The top seed, Ivan Lendl, and the world’s number five, Miloslav Mecir, aim for the last 16 in the French Open today when the championships take on a strong Czechoslovak flavour.
The defending champion, Lendl, who dropped a set in each of the first two rounds, looks for a more convincing performance against the Frenchman, Thierry Tulasne, to further his ambitions of a third French title. Mecir's third-round opponent is another Czechoslovak, Milan Srejber, who knocked out 1977 French . Open champion, Guillermo Vilas, of Argentina, yesterday. ■
Czechoslovakia also send a player into the first match on the Roland Garros centre court when Karel Novacek takes on Eric Winogradsky, the French wild card entry who removed third seed Stefan Edberg of Sweden in the previous round. The women’s top seed, Martina Navratilova, now an American but bom in Prague, and erstwhile compatriot, Helena Sukova, seeded fifth and up against Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union, extend the Czechoslovak connection. Seven of the 16 men’s seeds failed to reach the third round,
