Top judoka may be starter for S.I.
New Zealand’s top woman judoka, Donna Guy, of Auckland, could be among the starters in the South Island judo championships at St Thomas’ College this week-end. Guy has been invited to compete in the tournament and officials did not expect to know until today whether she would make the trip south. A bronze medallist at the world championships in The Netherlands last year, Guy is building up for another international trip. Should she accept the invitation Guy will ensure a good senior women’s open competition in Christchurch with Canterbury’s Sandra Manderson, a former NewL Zealand title holder, also in the field. Brenda Leftly, though only a lightweight, should also perform with
credit In the senior men’s open the familiar Canterbury trio of Graeme Spinks, John Moody and Mike Smith are again expected to stand out Among the top contenders in the weight divisions will be Kevin Hunter (Central Districts), under 65kg, recently returned from two months training in Austria. Altogether the championships have attracted 186 entries with a pleasing contingent from Southern Districts and increased numbers in the women’s and girls’ divisions. As the build-up continues for the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland all players will be under the eyes of the New Zealand selectors attending, Brian Cloynes, of Dunedin, and Ben Griffiths, of Auckland.
