Canty one of two unbeaten in hockey

Auckland and Canterbury were the unbeaten teams after the second day of the A.N.Z. Champions women’s hockey tournament at Whangarei yesterday. Canterbury impressed with an emphatic 4-0 win over North Shore, that side being stunned by Canterbury’s initial attack which realised a goal from the first two passes of the game. Maree Flannery slotted the ball into the net after only 20s. The Canterbury side looked a different side to the day before, being confident and eager to carry the ball to North Shore. Shore’s raids into Canterbury territory were spasmodic. and posed no real threat.

Canterbury created many scoring opportunities, but there were no positive results until the second half. The build-up to the circle was varied and effective, but play broke down at the circle’s edge on many occasions.

Flannery notched her second goal after receiving a pass off the backline from Sue Duggan. Duggan soon scored the goal of the day herself. She

looped the ball past the keeper after drawing her out of the goal mouth. The final Canterbury goal came when Mary Clinton cracked in a hard drive from a corner bracket late in the game.

Lorraine Rouse hit form and supported well on attack and defence.

Canterbury’s improved performance was encouraging for its chances of remaining the titleholder. Other results:— Wajkato 5, Otago 0; Auckland 2, Wellington 0.
