The Chateau Beaufort, in south-east France, as Robert Louis Stevenson drew it in 1878. Stevenson’s report on his travels, “Travels with a Donkey,” has appeared in dozens of editions. A new illustrated edition includes old paintings and drawings from the route as it appeared in Stevenson’s day, along with modern photographs of the same territory (Chatto and Windus/ Book Reps, 1987, $39.95). The French Government Tourist Office has turned Stevenson’s route into a popular walking trail. Stevenson, helped and hindered by his donkey Modestine, took 12 days to travel 120 miles. Introducing this edition, Robin Neillands advises that modern walkers should allow two weeks for the hills and dales of the Cevennes. They should avoid the heat of summer, and should carry as little gear as possible. Adequate accommodation is still available from hospitable French villagers.
