Highest of accolades

Sir,—During a period of five years, my late husband, Peter Mahon, received some hundreds of letters from caring New Zealanders within the length and breadth of the country. After his death the Mahon family received similar affection. Therefore, I feel that this may be an appropriate moment in which to allow your readers to share in a unique personal event. Recently, I was presented with a folder containing copies of many of the letters written requesting an honour for Peter Mahon. I was invited to accept the folder with the hope that this would be looked upon, by his family, as the very highest of accolades. After reading the content, I can only say that indeed it is. The entire family are touched by this remarkable gesture. Hopefully, this letter will express our gratitude to the public in general.—Yours, etc., MARGARITA MAHON. Auckland, May 26, 1987.
