Imperial Time favourably placed in Winter Cup at Addington tonight

By

G. K. YULE

Imperial Time looks favourably placed on 10m to gain his sixth win for the season in the 3200 m Chateau Regency Canterbury Park Winter Cup at Addington Raceway this evening. Victory would advance the talented four-year-old to within two wins of a start in the next Toyota New Zealand Cup, a goal towards which his trainer, Peter Jones, has had him headed for some time. Imperial Time comes into this event with a handsome last-start victory on the course to his credit. That was achieved on May 8 when he had Lorfay and the fast-finishing Dream Lustre following him home at the end of a rousing 2600 m run at a 2min 4.2 s mile rate. There will be a sharp rise in class in this field, but Imperial Time should manage that without too much difficulty and the distance of the race should be well within his capabilities no matter how testing the pace. Dream Lustre was the win favourite for the 3200 m won so narrowly by Bionic Raider at Washdyke last Saturday, but he managed to beat only one runner home. However, his run was by no means as dismal as his placing might suggest. A line attached to the hopple

shorteners of Bionic Raider became entangled around a wheel of Dream Lustre’s sulky, jamming it. Dream Lustre took fright as a clip knocked against the wheel and gave John Hay a difficult drive.

Dream Lustre will only have to reproduce the run which landed him third behind Imperial Time at their lastest meeting to be one of the hardest to head. The backmarker, Sir Alba, will be set a difficult assignment from 40m, but it will by no means be an impossible one. After starting from 50m, he made ground late in last Saturday’s race at Washdyke and finished a splendid fifth. With average luck, he could finish in the money which could be one of his last starts in the interests of the Teahens of Arowhenua.

Free’s Best, Missed Again, Sossy, Bionic Raider, Aran Blaze, Lorfay and Carefree Princess are all capable of big runs and they must be respected in what should be one of the more interesting contests of the night. Dreamy Guy, Mythical and False Image will be in demand in the Metropolitan Life Assurance Pace, the second leg of the T.A.B. double, a race in which the chances of Revolution, Polita, Precipitate, Lord Kara, Megatrend and Chummy must also be considered.
