Addington market Strong store lamb sale
Prices rose as much as $2 a head during a strong sale of store lambs at the Addington market yesterday. The yarding of almost 3700 lambs attracted keen farmer interest. Romney ewe lambs sold particularly well, two lines making $28.20 and $26. Most reasonable-condition lambs sold between $2l and $23, and very few sales were made at less than $l5. A small yarding of generally mediocre-quality adult sheep sold freely. Among sales of mated ewes was a line of medium Romneys at just over $22, while most other mated ewes fetched round $lB. A line of wolly wethers sold at $21.20. A feature of the cattle sale was the strong demand from as far south as South Canterbury for mated cows. Most good breeding cows ranged from $350 to $4OO, with mated Herefords from A. E. and M. E. Birdling reaching $416 and Herefords from Winterslow station making $4OB. The inquiry for other types of adult cattle lacked the buoyancy of recent weeks, although the calf market was steady. The bulk of the calves were station-bred with very few top steer calves offered. Good station steers sold in the $260 to $2BO bracket with a pen of big Simmentals making $4OO. The yardings were 3700 store lambs (4700 last week), 550 calves (810) and 245 adult cattle (530). Because of the high numbers of prime and store stock still being offered at Addington, the North Canterbury Stock and Station Agents’ Association has decided to continue with two-day sales at Addington for another week. Prime stock will be sold
next Tuesday and store cattle and store sheep on Wednesday. Sales included.— Store lambs: Living Springs Trust (Allandale), 216 Perendales at $25 to $26.40; J. A.
