Praise for N.Z. fruit
New Zealand necatrines, apricots, and peaches will have an Australian market for some time yet, says Mr Peter Kewley, of the Coles New World Australia supermarket chain. Mr Kewley controls buying and distribution for the fresh produce department of the chain. He said that more fruit was bought from New Zealand this year. “Your fruit quality was good right throughout the season, particularly nectarines, which were very popular with Australian consumers,” he said. The increase was in spite of an over-supply of excellent fruit from New Zealand and Australia, and some consumer resistance to buying non-Aus-tralian produce. However, the increasing quality of Australian stone-fruit and the cost of getting imported produce onto the Australian market would need to be considered by New Zealand producers, he said.
