Street appeal
The Christchurch Rape Crisis and Incest Survivors’ Centre will hold a street appeal on May 29 because of financial problems. “We find it a constant struggle to keep the centre going,” said the centre’s spokeswoman, Ms Victoria Bromme. The centre received about $22,000 a year from the Government but extra funds were needed if the centre was to do its best. There were three paid staff and seven volunteers at present. "Ideally, we should have five paid staff, which would enable us to conduct education programmes in the community,” she said. The centre, which had continuous telephone service, saw about 30 people a month.
“About 80 per cent relate to incest victims.” Ms Broome said she was unsure about the centre's future, particularly next year.
