PA Auckland Rugby World Cup teams eliminated after their three pool matches and subsequent quarterfinals will have to watch the semi-finals and final on their home television sets.
The eight eliminated pool teams will be dispatched home as soon as their cup matches are over. The losing quarterfinalists will also suffer the same fate.
The losing semi-final-ists, who will play for third and fourth positions, will be the only competing countries to get ringside seats for the final on June 20.
“There is no provision for the eliminated teams to remain behind for the final, even at their own expense,” said Dick Littlejohn, chairman of the New Zealand section of the cup organisation. “When you work it out at about $3OOO a day for each team, and have them in New Zealand or Australia for 20 days, you are looking at extra costs of about $1 million,” Mr Littlejohn said.
“It would be hard to justify that extra expense of rugby money.” The airline ticketing arrangements would prevent any sides staying at their own expense for the post-section matches, he said.
