Park extends club squash lead
Lancaster Park extended its lead by another two points when the men's open grade inter-club squash competition continued on Tuesdav evening. While Park took maximum points against High School Old Boys after some closely fought encounters, Christchurch I dropped one match against Football. Geoff Hayes losing to Tim Cook in five games. After its 10-pointer against Linwood Sumner moved into equal-second place with Christchurch I, leaving Park four points clear. The Blank Trophy round ends next week with the competition still in the balance though the odds now favour Park. In the Sumner v. Linwood clash at the Christchurch Football Courts Linwood's Craig Hibbert made a personal protest about the slippery conditions, conceding his match against Blair Michelson early in the fifth game. Hibbert considered that the risk of injury was too great. Linwood lost two further five-setters on the night and is not yet totally out of relegation danger. Football is still the likely candidate for that role, though next week Linwood will be missing Hibbert against Christchurch II while Football will face a depleted Burnside team. In women's open grade Mount Pleasant retained its slender two-point lead, aveng■ng its first-round loss to Sumner.
Mount Pleasant was successful in spite of a jaded Carolyn Viggers loosing to Justine Marriott in five games after nearly clinching the match. 3-0. Marriott kept the pressure on well and took the "Player of the Week” award with her first victory of the season over the Canterbury No. 1. Further down the order for Mount Pleasant both Ann Harliwich and Sue Mullaly clearly reversed their firstround losses to Lorraine Sutherland and Saskia O'Brien respectively. AH the women's contests were played at Lancaster Park, where wet walls posed some problems. Results:— MEN Burnside 8, Christchurch II 2 N. Lloyd beat G. Cotton. 79. 9-1. 9-1. 9-0; K. Quinn lost to E.
