BNZ joins ANZ network
NZPA Sydney The Bank of New Zealand, which has been noted for its aggressive marketing approach on the Australian side of the Tasman, announced yesterday that it had joined one of the largest automatic teller machine networks in Australia. The bank said it had linked in with the ANZ Banking Group’s network, which already included
the National Australia Bank and the Credit Union. BNZ’s chief executive in Australia, Mr Leigh Scott-Kemmis, said the bank’s customers would now be able to use their cards at 2000 machines around Australia and even more overseas. “At the same time, we can get on with the business of banking, without having to get involved in the day-to-day ownership
and maintenance of ATMs,” he said. BNZ customers would be able to use the machines through their Visa card, which is issued as part of the bank’s Smarter Cheque Account. The account was launched last year and Mr Scott-Kemmis said it was the first of its kind in Australia to combine certain features, such as a high daily rate of interest
and immediate overdraft facilities.
“Its wide acceptance in the retail market is reflected in the 3 per cent market share which the Smarter Account has captured in the past year,” he said.
“Other banks have followed with similar products, but none have yet been able to match all the terms and conditions of the Smarter Account or its popularity.”
