Molestation
Sir,—ln the court news on May 15, was a report of the sexual molestation of a 10-year-old girl by a 35-year-old man. It was reported, apparently as mitigating evidence, that the man, after molesting the child, told her she was never to allow
anyone to touch her like that again. The message the child was given was that the fault was hers. She should not have allowed this thing to happen. He did not say to the little girl: “I have done something wrong. What has happened is no fault of yours.” No, it became her responsibility. Virtually every woman who has been sexually abused as a child, carries this load of guilt and responsibility in trying to resolve the devastating effect it has had on her life. It is a gross injustice and every possible step should be taken to redress it.—Yours, etc., PAULINE O’REGAN. May 17, 1987.
