Shooting triggers strike by 150,000
NZPA-Reuter Colombo A total of 150,000 tea workers in central Sri Lanka went on strike yesterday in protest. against the shooting of a coworker by! the police last week, union officials said. A. spokesman for the Ceylon Workers Congress (C.W.C.), which called the strike, said it had stopped work at 75 plantations in the tea growing areas of Nuwara Eliya, Hatton and Talawakelle. Officials of the C.W.C., the largest plantation union, said the shooting of the Tamil worker, who was badly injured in one leg, was unwarranted and provoked unnecessary panic among workers. The police said they shot at the youth when he tried to run away while being questioned at Talawakelle. The C.W.C. spokesman estimated loss of piwiuction could be about 175,000 kilos, . W
