Veteran glad horses off roads
By
GREG TORODE
Ninety-six years old and still driving, the veteran motorist, Mr William Fleming, passed his annual driving test last week. “Things have changed a bit since I first started. I was pleased to see those horses get off the roads,” he said. "Today the roads are better and the cars are faster, but I can still remember getting my old Model T into top gear on the Port Hills," he said. Mr Fleming, who has lived in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Elda, for 64 years, has been driving for 70 years. “He hasn’t had even one accident or offence in all that time,” Mrs Fleming was quick to say. “He is simply a wonderful driver.” Mr Fleming said his secret of success was being well prepared and not driving ahead of his eyesight.
