Top runners to compete
Both John Campbell (Invercargill) and Bernadine Portenski (Wellington), the winners of the tough Fletcher marathon at Rotorua two weeks ago, will line up again in the City of Christchurch marathon on May 31. Campbell won the same race last year and went on to represent New Zealand in the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games. He is well known for his no-nonsense approach to marathons and likes to run aggressively at the front of the pack. While the New Brighton runner, Tom Bimie, has a remarkably consistent record in this marathon with two wins
and a second in his last three starts he will have his work cut out to . beat Campbell. In Rotorua Birnie could not match Campbell over the final stages, finishing third. Portenski, second last year, looks to have the women’s event to herself in 1987. Among the entrants is a blind runner from Auckland, Tui Rupe, who may make an attempt on the world record of about three hours. The total entries are 500 for the marathon and 1500 for the half-marathon, about 700 down - on last year. „
