Accordion titles to Auckland
A strong Auckland contingent won almost all the titles in the national accordion championships in Christchurch. Twenty-three of the 27 national awards went to Aucklanders while the other four stayed in Christchurch, after the day of competition among the 80 entrants. A Christchurch trio, the Junior Accordettes — Ryan Smith, Bryan Zoutendijk and Dane O’Brien — won the junior group award for players 13 years and under. Dane O’Brien also won the elementary solo title for players 11 and under. Pearl Bush-King’s Accordionettes, a 10-mem-ber group of Christchurch players aged from 13 to adults, won the entertainment class title. Another Accordettes group in Christchurch — Pearl Bush-King, Raewyn Pope, Diane Penrose, Greg Brook and George Patterson — won the senior group award.
