Improvement expected from Noble Bay today

Special correspondent New Plymouth Expect improvement from Noble Bay on his home track today. The five-year-old is taking a little while to warm up in his new campaign but once he does get hot then it is time to watch out. At his best Noble Bay is a smart galloper capable of matching most of the best winter gallopers. He has raced well on the Hawera track and has already won three races on his home course, including one at today’s distance of 1600 m. Another factor in Noble Bay’s favour is that he will have the services of the country’s number one rider, Lance O’Sullivan. Foxton jockey Garry Phillips won this race 12 months ago with Melbeck. Today he has the ride on Kelly Boy, which could easily give Phillips a repeat win. Kelly Boy was disappointing last time out but a couple of placings before that represented solid performances. Kai Time won after producing a powerful finishing burst at the Foxton meeting last week-end. She is bound to be more in favour with the punters on this occasion.

Work of Art, Alcoran, Leading Glance, Diana Palmer and Hayleen would all have claims in an even line-up. The 1600 m feature is the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting. In the second leg, the Brookdale Stud Sprint Handicap Kairau Lad is expected to continue his solid form. Kairau Lad has been racing well in recent weeks and his performances include a seven-length win at Te Rapa two starts back. Since then he ran second behind Catering King, again at Te Rapa, earlier this month. Dee Opal, a promising filly, will provide strong opposition to Kairau Lad. She failed last time out in the Cuddle Stakes but should be forgiven that run as her previous form was first class. Auto Air is resuming racing after a lengthy spell but is in forward condition and at his best he could account for this field. Nitty Gritty recently won a trial and might not be too far away, while Piat D’or, Love A Handle and Fortune Road give Stratford trainer Dick Bothwell a strong hand in the $BOOO sprint.
