Patrick Campbell moving to Palmerston North

PA Hastings Patrick Campbell,. for years one of the leading racehorse trainers in Hastings, has decided to move his base to Palmerston North. As from the start of the new racing season, August 1, Campbell will train from Awapuni Lodge, the stables made famous by the late Eric Temperton. The property, owned by the Duncan family, is presently undergoing extensive renovations. The bld yards have been pulled down and the ground levelled ready for new yards to be built. Work is also being done to upgrade the existing buildings. Campbell moves in under the same arrangement as Temperton. He will take into his care the two or three horses the Duncans are likely to have in work this year and will also train as

many horses from outside owners as the stables can cope with. There is room for 20 horses in the barnstyle stables. Campbell, although loath to leave Hawke’s Bay, sees the move as “too good a chance to refuse.” “The location more than anything is probably the main reason for the shift,” he said. “It’s just so central down there. "There’s nothing wrong with training horses in Hastings or the Hastings track. But down there you have access to a swimming pool and staff availability is likely to be so much better. “Then there’s the travelling costs that. you have to consider too.” Campbell will be a big loss to the Hawke’s Bay racing scene. He was leading Hastings trainer for three consecutive seasons, from 1982-85, and has prepared some of

the best gallopers to come out of the district in the last decade. He is probably best known as the trainer of Burletta, the 1983-84 three-year-old filly of the year, which won a total of 16 races and $205,000 in stakemoney. Claymore Boy, Tarlton, Out of the Blue, Our Buddy and Lagerfeld are some of the other notable gallopers that have been trained from the Campbell stable. Claymore Boy won 11 races, including the Ipswich Cup in Australia, while Tarlton won eight races and Out of the Blue six. Our Buddy and Lagerfeld have been big winners for the stable in the last couple of years. Lagerfeld, along with most of the horses in Campbell’s present team, will be moved to Awapuni Lodge. ' ' Campbell has not only made his mark as a

trainer but also as a tutor of successful apprentices. Two of this country’s best jockeys in recent times, Jimmy Cassidy and Chris McNab, both served their apprenticeship under Campbell. So also did the successful South Island jockey, Bruce Smith, while another promising rider, Mark Heaney, is presently working for Campbell. Campbell started training racehorses in 1973, in partnership with Bruce Marsh. Two of the first horses they had were Ah Bee and Greenstone. The partnership split in 1976, with Campbell staying in Hastings and Marsh deciding to move to Woodville. Campbell then rented stables from the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club for nine years before taking over as manager of the Napier Park Racing Club’s Southland Road stables in April, 1985.
