It was the first time that a Canterbury team had played in the tournament This year it drew a record 22 entries from throughout New Zealand. In the quarter-finals Canterbury beat South Canterbury, 1-0, and in the semifinals it met Nelson. The result was a l-l drew, and Canterbury progressed to the final after a remarkable penalty stroke shoot-out Canterbury won the competition, 2-1. The Canterbury goal-keeper stopped three of the Nelson strokes while two of the Canterbury strokes missed the goal, and the two successful strokes trickled past the Nelson goal-keeper.
