Oxford house gutted by fire

An Oxford house was gutted by fire yesterday afternoon after firemen had difficulty getting a water tanker to the scene. The house, near Bush Road, was on a steep hill and the Oxford Volunteer Fire Brigade’s water tanker was unable to climb the grade. A neighbour’s tractor had to be used to tow the tanker to the fire.

The brigade’s chief officer, Mr Ross Dailey, said that by the time water was available the fire had a strong hold on the house, which was owned by Mr G. Thompson. The fire, which was noticed about 4.30 p.m. was believed to have started in the kitchen. The house was unoccupied at the time.
