AUSTRALIA Industrials favour mini-Budget

The Australian sharemarket finished barely steady in mixed trading yesterday, although industrial stocks responded favourably to Wednesday’s mini-Budget, brokers said.

They said an easing in metal prices early yesterday morning, N.Z. time, led to a weakening in the resources sector, especially as early overseas buying dried up. At the close of trading the all-ordinaries index was 0.6 points down at 1848.5. National turnover was a high 190 million shares, $4l IM. Turnover was boosted by a large sale in Pancontinental Mining, with about 18.8 M shares traded. Analysts suggested the turnover represented the sale of Botena’s holding in the group and did not imply a takeover. The shares added 20c to 405.
