Railways stands by policy

PA Auckland The Railways Corporation stands by its policy of replacing redundant workers, a corporation spokesman said yesterday.

Otahuhu railway workers had asked the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, to inquire into the corporation’s paying redundancy money outside of assurances given to their union representatives. In one case a foreman was replaced three times with men getting severance pay, they said. The corporation spokesman, Mr Bill Hopper, said the Otahuhu union’s statements showed lack of understanding of the corporation’s severance policy. “The case of the four foremen is totally consistent with Railways policy, which is part of a flexible system which allows those who want to go, to go, and those who want to stay, to stay, therefore avoiding compulsory redundancies,” he said.
