Timaru berth approved
The Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, yesterday confirmed the Ports Authority decision approving a wharf extension at Timaru.
The Lyttelton Harbour Board had objected to the authority’s decision. Mr Prebble said it was clear port users and shipping lines using Timaru
strongly supported the development. “The development of the North Mole wharf extension will provide a heavy-duty berth with sufficient length, draught and back-up area for it to be successful as a multipurpose berth,” he said. Mr Prebble said the essence of the Lyttelton
Harbour Board’s appeal was not that the Ports Authority decision was wrong but that the authority should have approved Lyttelton’s request for permission to reclaim. The Minister said he had no hesitation in dismissing Lyttelton’s appeal and approving the extension to the wharf.
