Call to evict Mr Wellington

PA Wellington Parliament’s Chairman of Committees, Mr John Terris, last evening called on the Acting Sergeant-at-Arms to evict a National member who had returned to the chamber while under suspension. Only minutes before, Mr Merv Wellington (Nat.,

Papakura) had been suspended for 24 hours after refusing to leave the chamber for shouting “rubbish.”

When he left then, Mr Wellington turned and shouted “I’ll get you” at the Labour benches.

Ten minutes later he returned and sat in his seat, soon prompting hurried discussions among grim-faced Labour and National members. The Leader of the House, Mr Palmer, spoke to his Opposition counterpart, Mr Bill Birch (Nat., Franklin).

Mr Terris, the Labour member for Western Hutt, then called on the Acting Sergeant-at-Arms to effectively evict Mr Wellington.

However, Mr Wellington then left on his own accord, flanked by two other National members.
