Colonel known in N.Z.

The Defence Department’s public relations officer in Christchurch, Major Bruce Morrison, yesterday remembered a quiet, powerfully built Fijian who attended an

officer cadet course at Waiouru Military Camp in 1968. Major Morrison was among the 1968 intake of ’officer cadets at Waiouru, and came to know “Steve”

Rabuka as a fellow professional soldier and a friend. “He was a reserved person, a very quiet man who was intensely proud of being Fijian. He was a career soldier who also happened to be an outstanding athlete, representing Fiji at boxing in the Pac-Paclfic Games.

“Fijians are a powerfully built race but Steve Rabuka stood out. He was well spoken with a thoroughly professional approach to his job. He took soldiering seriously. It isn’t difficult to imagine that he would take events in his country seriously,” said Major Morrison.

Colonel Rabuka subsequently attended several other Army training courses in New Zealand and served for seven months as a company officer with the 6th Gurkha Rifles in Hong Kong.
