M.P. offers help
Hei He! residents distressed about being unable to pay huge increases in their leasehold charges should call their local member of Parliament. “They can come to me and I will go personally to Landcorp and work through their situation,” said the member of Parliament for Yaldhurst, Mrs Margaret Austin. She said she had al-
ready worked closely with two elderly women who had approached her last year. Each case would be looked at on its merits. Mrs Austin was replying to comments by the National Party’s candidate for Yaldhurst, Mr James Bacon, who said she was washing her hands of the affair. Mr Bacon brought the Hei Hei problems to light
earlier this week. The corporatisation of the Lands and Survey Department to Landcorp had led to the problems, Mr Bacon said. Landcorp was driven by a monetary aim and was not answerable to the voter. Both Mrs Austin and Landcorp said the increases were a result of the 33-year land leases’ expiring and were nothing to do with corporatisation.
