Attempt to stop Soviet sealing

A campaign is being mounted by the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition to stop the Soviet Union, from sealing. The coalition said it had received information that the Soviet Union had done some “experimental sealing” in the Southern Ocean last summer season. Two vessels had undertaken pilot studies in what the coalition saw as leading up to • commercial sealing. The Soviet Union had notified members of- the
Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals and subsequent inquiries had elicited little extra information. Ms Cath Wallace, the convener of the coalition in New Zealand, said this was cause for extreme alarm. She urged members to write to the Soviet Embassy in Wellington expressing concern about this activity and asking for further information on the number and species of seals taken, duration and exact.location of the hunt, methMi of kill, and nature at research done
