Blenheim police agree suspect was in town

Blenheim reporter The Blenheim police have no reason to doubt that the. alleged bank robber, Christopher John Lewis, spent last weekend in Blenheim. The proprietor of the Cherylea Motel in Nelson Street, Mr Martin Miller, said yesterday that he telephoned the police on Wednesday evening after seeing a picture of Lewis on television and in a newspaper after his arrest in Auckland. Mr Miller said the man booked in last Friday under the name of David Williams and gave a Dunedin address. He had a blackened face and said that his car had broken down.

The man said he wanted a room, possibly for two nights. He paid on the spot for the unit and for two cooked breakfasts. He watched two video tapes in his unit on Saturday and went out in the evening. Mr Miller said the man left about 9 a ; m. on Monday by taxi for the airport. Inspector R. G. E. Winter, of the Blenheim police, said yesterday that he had no doubt at all that the man was Lewis, but had no further comment to make.

*‘l see no point at all in perpetuating his shortlived glory. I don’t see any point in adding to an already over-publicised event,” he said.
