Dilemma over abuse reports

PA Dunedin Playcentre staff have settled a moral dilemma over reporting instances of child abuse. The question of mandatory reporting was raised at the New Zealand Playcentre Federation’s national conference in Dunedin. A delegate from South Auckland, Ms Janet Hogan, said people wanting to report that a child had been abused were faced with the dilemma of breaking the child’s confidence. “Mandatory reporting would be a relief. It takes

away that dilemma,” she said. However, another delegate said a person should take the risk of reporting a case of child abuse to avoid the risk of the abuse continuing. “The other risk, of further abuse to the child, is too great to ignore.” It was decided playcentre associations should get in touch with child protection teams in their areas and become more involved with services supporting the prevention of child abuse, such as the Social Welfare Department.
