Maritime library opens
A maritime reference library has been opened as part of the Lyttelton Museum, providing a comprehensive collection of books about shipping history. The museum’s curator, Mr Baden Norris, said the library was opened about two months ago in response to numerous inquiries from the public about marine history. He said there is an enormous demand for this kind of information. The library covers a wide range of historical topics including shipping in general, Lyttelton history, shipping companies, Antarctic history, and ship rigging and navigation. There is also a collection of newspaper clippings dating from the 19305.
Most of the material was presented to the library, although some books had been bought, Mr Norris said.
He spent about a year putting the collection together.
