Players on strike
PA Hamilton Waikato Football Club players have gone on strike in protest over the refusal of the team’s directors to reinstate their sacked soccer coach, Roger Wilkinson. The club’s board yesterday turned down the players’ demand for Mr Wilkinson’s reinstatement. A players spokesman, Dave Merritt, said his team-mates had unanimously decided not to play again until they had received a satisfactory explanation from the board as to why Mr Wilkinson
had been sacked. v The players were "upset and angry” that Wilkinson had been dismissed and wanted him reinstated, he'said. i “We were all shocked about it especially when we are lying second in the league and everything was going well on the field.” ■ The directors had not told the players why Wilkinson had been removed and until they did “we’re taking strike action”. The players would review their position after meeting the directors and coaches, Merritt said. 1
