Steve Mather out for season

By

JOHN COFFEY

The severe leg injury suffered by Steve Mather during Canterbury’s rugby league match against Wellington on Tuesday night will keep him on the sidelines for the remainder of the season. Mather was carried off the Addington Show Grounds on a stretcher and was told yesterday by an orthopaedic surgeon

that he had ruptured the cruciate ligaments of his right knee. Surgery has been scheduled, and Mather said yesterday the chances of a revised diagnosis and a quick recovery “are more like one thousand to one rather than one hundred to one.”

A salesman, he faces 12 weeks off work as he recuperates from the operation. There will then

be a lengthy period of rehabilitation.

“The surgeon said the injury was worse than Robbie Deans’s,” said Mather. “I had been hoping it wasn’t that serious because it felt not too bad this morning. “It just happened in a tackle. Some guy grabbed my leg and it stayed where it was while my body went the other way. When I landed I felt an enormous pain “ in my

right knee,” recalled Mather gloomily. Mather’s mishap occurred in his second season on the wing for Canterbury. Tuesday night’s game was his tenth for the province, and he also represented South Island against Auckland last winter.

Depending on the outcome of the surgery, Mather is hopeful of resuming for Addington in club football next year.
