Sites ‘not safe’
PA Auckland Hazardous building practices on Auckland’s building sites force the Labour, Department to stop work on at least one site daily. The Labour Department’s safety construction chief, Mr John Jordan, said the department closed down work on at least one site each day until legal
safety requirements were met. Hazards included material falling off buildings on to the street and inadequate guards for site workers to protect them from holes such as lift wells. The New Zealand Labourers’ Union’s northern branch secretary, Mr Len Smith, said the union was extremely disturbed about the poor level of safety on building sites.
