Antelope farming likely

An antelope from India may become a common sight on some New Zealand farms. Dr Graham Barrell, senior lecturer in animal physiplogy at Lincoln College, is awaiting permission to conduct a study on the Indian nilgai.

The nilgai could be a useful addition to the animals farmed in this country, said Dr Barrell, but it all hinged on getting permission from the Animal Health Division of the Ministry of Agriculture. Nilgai (pronounced nilguy) are

smaller than a cow and slightly larger than a red deer. Dr Barrell said that an evaluation of their farming potential would have to consider such things as growth rates, reproduction rates, meat quality and their manageability.
