DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION LOMBOK CRAFTS PROJECT LOMBOK, INDONESIA Applications are invited for a two-person team for a proposed village-based project in Lombok island, Indonesia. The project objectives are to strengthen the village ceramic craft industry by increasing the volume and value of existing pottery forms (mainly hand-built and pit-fired) for the tourist and decor markets. Focus will be on teaching Lombok potters improved techniques and new designs based on traditional shapes and forms, and on the development of existing and new markets for the pottery. The team will be required to live in a rural Islamic environment and to work as a self-contained team with women potters in three villages. Qualities of social sensitivity and cross-cultural awareness will therefore be as vital as technical skills on this project. Person Specification — Competence in a variety of appropriate potting and firing techniques. — Ability to convey ideas and to train people in the use of new techniques, and a demonstrated interest in teaching. — Proven management and marketing experience. — Experience in costing, basic bookkeeping and budgeting. The successful applicants will be required to undergo up to three months' intensive language training in Indonesia prior to start of assignment and can expect to leave New Zealand by August 1987. The assignment will be for a period of one year with possibility of extension for another year. Terms and conditions of appointment are set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
