Baby food lawsuit settled

NZPA-Reuter Philadelphia Beech-Nut Nutrition Corporation, the second largest American baby food maker, has agreed to pay SUS7.S million ($13.05 million) to settle a civil lawsuit charging it sold millions of bottles of adulterated and misbranded infant apple juice, lawyers have said. The class action suit was brought last year in the Philadelphia Federal Court by Giant Market, a Pennsylvania-based grocery chain, and a number of consumers. The suit asked for SUSIO million to cover economic losses. There were no claims of injury, said David Berger, a Philadelphia lawyer representing Giant Market. Beech-Nut settled the case without admitting liability. A spokesman said the company believed the settlement was fair to all parties, both consumers and retailers. Mr Berger said that of the total amount or the settlement, SUS2.S million worth of Beech-Nut food products will be distributed to grocery stores and other retail outlets. Consumers will receive $5 million.
