Pakistan has solid win against Essex

NZPA-Reuter. Chelmsford, England Pakistan achieved the first win of its England tour yesterday, beating the county champion, Essex, by a comfortable 210-run margin. The all-rounder, Wasim Akram, and the offspinner, Tauseef Ahmed, took five for 40 and four for 51 respectively as Essex, set 399 to win, fell for 188 on the third and final day. Akram had tormented Essex earlier by hitting 59 not out in Pakistan’s second innings total of 217 for seven declared: The England opener, Graham Gooch, was among the left-arm fast bowler’s victims. Gooch fell first ball on Sunday and presented a return catch to Akram off his third delivery yesterday. It was his fifth duck in eight innings and could cost him a place in the England squad for the forthcoming one-day internationals against Pakistan. The squad will be selected on Friday. With Gooch left to reflect on his loss of form,

Brian Hardie took up the challenge with a defiant 83 and boosted his first class aggregate for the season to 539. Hardie held out for 231 minutes, hitting 12 fours, but the rest of the batting crumbled around him. Pakistan tour officials are attempting to contact the top batsman, Javed Miandad, to establish when he will join the . party. Javed remained in Pakistan because his wife was > pregnant but now his , second son has been born and they still cannot track him down. The touring team thought he would ' arrive on Sunday; he was - first expected on May 7. The tour manager, 1 Hasib Ahsan, said, “We . hope to hear something definite within the next 24 , hours.” J Also missing is the leg spinner, Abdul Qadir, who stayed at home because his wife was ill. Pakistan i cannot say with any cer- ' tainty when he will join them. . 1 PAKISTAN * First innings 331/7 dec 1
