Samoan success for Hawkins

Hawkins Construction, Ltd, a division of McConnell Dowell, has won contracts in American Samoa for projects worth $5 million.

Hawkins is to build a $3.2 million, 160 metre long, 16 metre wide wharf for the Ronald Reagan Marine Railway. The marine railway services general shipping and the large tuna boat fleet operating out of Pago Pago harbour.

A second contract, worth $l.B million, is for upgrading the main road through Pago Pago to ease traffic conges-

tion and to improve drainage. Part of the contract involves improving drainage to stop flooding caused by American Samoa’s torrential rain, the inspiration for Somerset Maugham’s story “Rain.”

Hawkins has won contracts worth $22 million since registering in American Samoa in 1985.

Its biggest project was the building of a 60 bed retirement home for the Catholic Church. The traditional Samoan fale-sbaped buildings were constructed with concrete blocks made by Hawkins on site.
