Toshio Adachi’s letter ...
This is a translation of Toshio Adachi’s letter to Joan Wood: “I was very pleased to receive your letter. You were one of the Masterton sisters who looked after the seriously injured after the incident at Featherston. “Sisters in white clothes — they are memories dear to me. At the Anzac Hall reception held in our honour recently I made a speech, saying that it was our responsibility for that incident to have happened. “We were educated to die. Once captured as prisoners-of-war we were doomed to death. I think all the people at the reception understood why we acted the way we did at the incident
“You mentioned Mr Keith Robertson (who was the prison camp interpreter). He came to Japan just before he died. We held five welcome receptions for him when he was in Hiroshima. He stayed one night at my house and I remember the enjoyable day showing him round. “I was one of the seriously injured at the incident However, thanks to the kind looking after by the New Zealanders I have never been ill since. I returned home 43 years ago.
“Thank you indeed for looking after us then. You must be getting on with your age. I wish you a long life and good health.”
