Voters' choice
Sir,strongly recommend that anyone ■concerned about democracy <tadr in-particular, fair representative government for New Zealand, read Neil Ascherson’s article ; (May 9). Everything relative to the way we vote under the' “present,’ obsolescent version of democracy” is relevant to- New Zealand. Mr G. W. ; R 1 Palmer recommended 1 ai ... referendum offering to change bur method of voting. The Royal Commission suggests the method. Most New ':; Zealanders are <ndt knowledgeable about such alternatives. To I not vote. for. Labour, excludes? even the possibility of such a. change. “Tactical vbting,” such; : - as voting informally, could be used to indicate disapproval, butsuch a vote would come more;from Labour than National supporters and a mere 7. per cent? informal vote could see National ;, entrench, evfen deeper, our "terrifyingly decrepit and deformed democratic institutions.” Hope lies in our communication media increasing our knowledge of the voting alternatives available.— Yours, etc., L.
