Walkway extension open on Sunday
A new extension to the Crater Rim walkway on the Port Hills will be opened on Sunday.
“The Crater Rim walkway was the first New Zealand walkway to be opened in Canterbury — in 1978 — and was extended to the Bridle Path in 1985. This new extension, reflects how well the present walkway is used,” said the chairman of the Canterbury District Walkway Committee, Mr Brian Sly.
The new extension begins at the Sign of the Kiwi and travels along the
rim of the old Lyttelton volcano to Coopers Knob. It links the Sign of the Kiwi and the Sign of the Bellbird, and passes the Boon Hay Park, Kennedys Bush, and Cass Peak scenic reserves along its 6km length. Mr Sly said the committee was grateful to the two landowners who had allowed public access across their land for the walkway.
