Technical puts Rangers out of Chatham Cup
Technical bundled the Hertz travelling league leaders. Rangers, out of the Chatham Cup at English Park last night, winning, 1-0, to continue a fine cup record. Technical made the quar-ter-finals last season but was expected to struggle against Rangers, which has an unbeaten record in the league this season. Technical, which is unbeaten in the qualifying league, is now at home to Waihopi in the third round. Technical’s coach, Hal Upton, was full of praise for his players, saying they showed plenty of grit and discipline to head Rangers off. Technical began brightly and built some crisp moves, the former All White winger, Steve Wooddin, to the fore. It took the lead when a cross was played in low and Gus Neaves was on hand to bang the ball home after 35 minutes. The Technical players seemed to grow in confidence after the goal and defended
well in the second half as Rangers' tried to come back. The centre backs, John Ellis and Peter Burt, had fine matches, snuffing out the threat of George Hoggan and Greg Clark, while Terry Neville had a busy game in midfield. Rangers became more desperate as the match wore on but couldn’t grab the equaliser. The only time it ' managed to get the ball in the net was when Hoggan palmed a free kick home, only for the referee to spot the hand ball. In the early match Shamrock beat Rlccarton, 4-1, a scoreline flattering to the victors. Riccarton had slightly the better of the first half but fell behind to a Peter Schuyt goal. Shamrock asserted its authority as the match' wore on, and scored three times in the second half, through Steve Neill, Schuyt and Gary Scarlett, who converted a penalty. Shamrock is at home to Mosgiel in the next round.
